Using a white cast of characters—all of whom are clueless about what contemporary Native Americans are actually like—was another strategic comedic choice. FastHorse has been writing plays for well over a decade, but she has often had trouble getting Native-led productions greenlit. “I spent 12 years trying to get Native people cast, and I was not succeeding,” FastHorse says. “This play needed all white people.” She’s also using the Top hockey peeling on the seat is like hitting the post on an empty ner don’t hit the post shirt In addition,I will do this platform it’s given her to her advantage. “I have a play of white people on Broadway, but that means I have five more plays coming up this year that all have Native casts,” she says. As one of the few Indigenous artists to have a show make it to Broadway (one of the last known Native playwrights was the late Lynn Riggs, the gay Cherokee writer behind Green Grow the Lilacs), FastHorse feels a sense of duty—and pressure—not only to deliver smart Native stories to a mainstream audience, but also to keep them coming. “For me, the pressure is about making sure that the door stays open for the next Native writer, so that maybe we have one [play] every decade, or even one a year. This weekend, the Top hockey peeling on the seat is like hitting the post on an empty ner don’t hit the post shirt In addition,I will do this 2023 Coachella music festival kicks off in Indio, California. On the impressive roster for weekend one are headlining performers such as Bad Bunny, Blackpink, and Frank Ocean. (Personally, we’re excited for Blondie—can you say iconic?) These top musical acts are obviously the main draw, but the people-watching and street style are just as widely-anticipated. Since its inception in 1999, Coachella has evolved to become an event where one goes simply to be seen; celebrities, in particular, have shown up in the crowds wearing the best, flashiest ensembles. In honor, Vogue is taking a look back at some of the most memorable trends to have come out of the festival. While Coachella took off in the 2000s, it’s the early 2010s where the music festival truly became a star-studded street style event. Coachella regulars such as Katy Perry, Vanessa Hudgens, Zoe Kravitz, and championed the event’s sartorial spirit that is all about maximalism. The trending pieces? Think distressed denims, big belts, and—yes—those signature flower crowns. (Other fads, however, have not been as innocent: Feathered headdresses and bindis also hit a peak at Coachella during the 2010s, but luckily have since subsided in popularity, especially as discussions around cultural appropriation continue to come to light.) The question is: What will this year’s Coachella attendees wear? Will they remain true to past trends, or bring forward new style concepts? Only time will tell.
