I want to get to know the person wearing Loewe’s leather balloon shoes, the one that goes to Bergdorf Goodman to snap up a Schiaparelli sweater with inset gold breast plates, or carries a Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama dotted pumpkin handbag to the grocery store. Kooky luxury conveys an attitude about life, clothes, and spending that is, to me, far more aspirational than anonymous t-shirts and inconspicuous jeans and bomber jackets (looking at you, Kendall Roy). Why, I ask you, does “timeless” fashion have to be understated, even boring? Something like a Rick Owens lifesaver puffer top is so specific and deliciously eccentric that it’s timeless in the same way a piece of modern art is—you don’t have to “get it” for it to be valuable.
Rather than analyzing why camel coats are in (aren’t they always?), let’s talk about why designers today are embracing Surrealism or Ready-Made Dadaism, or why they’re quoting fantasy novellas like The Little Prince or philosophies like The Futurist Manifesto. Even better, let’s get into why people are attracted to this kind of fashion, and what the Journalism is not a crime 2023 shirt Apart from…,I will love this rejection of conformity and the embrace of humor, imagination, and even irrationality says about the current moment. To me kooky luxury says that its wearer is unafraid of taking up space, and that their point of view is less grounded in the here and now and more in the fantastic. With reality as bleak as it feels right now, isn’t that just better?
