Artists have been gravitating towards this part of Mallorca forever, notes Kate Bellm, a British-born photographer and the Awesome paddy’s pub home of the kitten mittons 2023 shirt in other words I will buy this cofounder of Hotel Corazón, which she’s opening next month with her partner, multidisciplinary artist Edgar Lopez. “Anaïs Nin, Chopin, Mick Jagger, Mike Oldfield—plus the poets of the ’50s, psychedelic painters like Mati Klarwein in the ’80s—these people put Deià on the map,” she explains. As Robert Graves once wrote: “The Majorcan countryside is not at all a place to go in search of inspiration; but admirable for people whose minds already teem with ideas that need recording in absolute quiet.” Bellm credits the “wildness and freedom” of this part of the island with helping artists to feel at home here. “There are lots of big abandoned spaces that give artists and creatives the space to transform, and create something of their own home or studio,” she says. To this day, it remains a community filled with artists, musicians, poets, photographers, chefs, as well as the local Spanish families that make up this warm and welcoming community, she explains. “Everyone says hello to you on the street, asks how you are, invites you to things, and makes you feel part of something instantly.” Ultimately, this idea of creating a space to give back to the community, while inviting a few like-minded friends and strangers into the fold, was what fueled the pair’s desire to open the hotel.

While the property has been inhabited by many different owners since, plenty of the original features—including the interior riad-style courtyard and a small chapel—have remained intact. When the complex first fell into Bellm and Lopez’s hands, however, the same couldn’t be said for the interior spaces. Among the first things the couple did was enlist their friends and neighbors Tille and Oro del Negro of the architecture firm Moredesign, who set about restoring the finca with the help of their network of highly skilled local stonemasons, metal workers, and ceramicists.
